A writer from Coalisland has beaten some of Northern Ireland’s most prominent journalists to be named Columnist of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Ronan McSherry, a journalist at the Ulster Herald, fended off competiton from the Sunday Life’s Gail Henerson, Belfast Telegraph’s Gail Walker, and Maeve Connolly from The Irish News to scoop the prize.

The award was presented to Mr McSherry at the CIPR Coca Cola Press Awards, held at the Europa Hotel in Belfast last Friday night. The award was a new category in this year’s ceremony and attracted the highest number of entries.

Mr McSherry impressed the judges with his weekly Tyrone Herald column, “Ronan’s Rant”.

In choosing Mr McSherry as the Columnist of the Year, the judges said: “This winner, as well as being funny and provocative, is able to weave the small details of life in Tyrone, into the bigger national and international issues of the day.”
