Could the Olympic torch be coming to Coalisland?

The Olympic torch could be passing through Coalisland next summer in the run up to the London 2012 games.

The torch is to pass through all 26 local authority areas as part of the Northern Ireland leg of the Olympic flame relay next year, according to proposals discussed by Dungannon council.

Councillors have surveyed confidential documents showing the preliminary route the torch will take through the Dungannon borough, creating much speculation over which towns and villages will make the cut.

The Olympic flame relay will take place in Northern Ireland between Sunday, June 3 and Wednesday, June 6 next year. It will first arrive at Portrush, followed by confirmed stops in Derry, Newry and finally Belfast as part of the three-day route.

The proposals for the route through the Dungannon council area were discussed by councillors at a strategic service delivery committee meeting late last month. Councillors were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement before viewing the top-secret relay route.

After viewing the proposals, councillors decided to write to the Olympic committee to suggest alterations to the Olympic flame relay.
