New Coalisland Special Olympics club to be launched

A new organisation in Coalisland to encourage people with learning disabilities to compete in the Special Olympics is to be launched.

The Eagles Special Olympics Club will help adults and children over eight who have learning disabilities to become more involved in the world of sport by encouraging them to take part in weekly training sessions, with the hope of advancing to the Special Olympics.

The new club will be formed at a meeting to be held in O’Neills Bar, Coalisland, on Thursday, September 29, at 7pm.

Athletes involved are expected to benefit from a healthier lifestyle, a social outlet, personal development, a chance to make new friends and raise their fitness levels – as well as having the opportunity to compete locally, provincially, at a national and world level.

A spokesman for the Eagles Special Olympics Club said: “There is no level of ability required and no boundaries as to what the athlete can achieve. Athletes from all areas are welcome.

“The next member on Team Ireland could be sitting next to you, working with you or in your own home.”

The regional games are to be held in June next year, followed by the Ulster Games, All Ireland Games and World Summer Games in Los Angeles California in 2015.

Organisers have called for volunteers to take part. Drop into O’Neills Bar, Coalisland, on Thursday, September 29, at 7pm for more details, or join the club’s Facebook page.
