A seven-year-old pupil who was killed in a shooting at a school in Connecticut has a relative living in the Coalisland area, it has emerged.

Prayers were said for Daniel Barden at mass in Coalisland on Sunday, December 16, after it was revealed that his second-cousin lives in the area.

Speaking to the congregation at midday mass, Fr Greg Carvill said a relative of the schoolchild lived in the Ballyclog and Donaghenry parish.

Daniel was among 20 children and six adults who were killed after a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook school in Newtown on Friday, December 14.

The gunman, named in media reports as Adam Lanza, killed his mother before driving to the school and opening fire.

An official list of the dead shows the schoolchildren who died were between six and seven years of age.

Public records have also identified Daniel’s parents as Jacqueline and Mark Barden.

Daniel was regarded as active first-grader and a budding athlete, being a soccer fan and a member of the school’s swimming team.

Friends visited the family’s Sandy Hook home on Saturday, December 15, with Rich Flashman, a pastor at the Beacon Hill Evangelical Free Church in Monroe, Connecticut.

He told the Wall Street Journal he prayed with the family.

Mr Flashman said: “They’re hurting. It’s exactly what you would expect. They just need prayer right now.”

“They’re grieving. All they know is they lost their child.”
