Island Wheelers stage successful cycling race

ABOUT 150 cyclists competed in Tyrone’s PJ Logan race, staged by Coalisland club the Island Wheelers.

The annual race saw a wide variety of cyclists race across a course covering Ballynakilly, Derrymeen and Kingarve.

It has been part of the area’s cycling calendar for about five years.

Island Wheelers club member Noel McLaughlin said: “It’s one of the best races in the calendar. It takes a lot of organising. It usually takes us about three or four months to pull everyone on-board.”

The cyclists gathered at Gortgonis Centre this afternoon before making their way to the race’s start line.

Eurocycles club members Conor Murphy and Tomas Martin took first and second places in the 54-mile main race, out of about 65 competitors.

A secondary race covering 34 miles was also staged, along with a 14-mile race for women and riders over the age of 50.
