A double bill of one-act plays looking at contemporary Northern Ireland from both sides of the generational divide is to be performed in CRAIC Theatre.
Belfast’s Ransom Theatre Company production Both Sides of the Story, pairs one-act plays Static, by Robert Anthony Welch, and Yes so I said Yes, by David Ireland.
With one play set in urban Belfast and the other in a rural border community, the pairing explores the differences and similarities of two very different families.
It also looks at the families’ divided and shifting loyalties, and the inter-generational tensions inherent in political and cultural transition.
Both Sides of the Story came about after Ransom’s artistic director, Rachel O’Riordan, asked herself: What happens when you find yourself professionally unemployed, when your previous profession was as a combatant?
Each play is linked by this theme, but shaped by the authors’ own ideas and concepts.
‘Static’ focuses on a stalwart old Irish Nationalist, out to pasture in the borderlands around Crossmaglen, and grappling with the changes required of him.
Gerard Jordan, Roy Heayberd, JD Kelleher, Paul Mallon, Charlotte McCurry and Conor MacNeill star in the production, while Mick Gordon directs of both plays.
The production will be shown in Coalisland as part of a five-date tour across Northern Ireland, following its billing as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen’s in October.
