Coalisland Special Olympics club meetings planned

Families are encouraged to attend two further meetings to help launch Coalisland’s Special Olympics Club.

The Eagles Special Olympics Club aims to help adults and children over eight years old who have learning disabilities to become more involved in the world of sport, and train towards taking part in the Special Olympics next year.

A final meeting with Special Olympics Ulster will take place on Wednesday, November 30 at 8pm in Gortgonis Complex.

The meeting will focus on the sport aspect of the Special Olympics, what is required to take part, who can compete, and the rules and regulations.

The Eagles’ first training session will be held on Thursday, December 8 at Primate Dixon Primary School at 7pm.

The athletes will have a chance to meet each other, meet the coaches and volunteers and try out some of the equipment the club will have on offer.

Paul Sweeney, sports officer and head coach for the club, said: “It will be a new experience for all and all athletes are expected to come along.

“The club starts here and this is what we have worked to achieve.”

He added: “We have had wonderful support throughout the community and hope that will continue as we near our goal.

“Thank you to all parents, volunteers and interested parties for attending meetings to get to this stage.”
