Brocagh teenager to make Aussie rules national debut

Aidan Corr, Greater Western Sydney

A teenager originally from Brocagh is to begin his professional sporting career in Australian rules football after being selected for a national team.

Tyrone-born Aidan Corr was among the first 15 unsigned players selected in this year’s Australian Football League (AFL) National Draft – the annual process of introducing new players to the league.

The 18-year-old, who left for Australia at the age of three with parents Raymond and Catherine, and siblings Elaine, Cathal and Izzie, will play for Greater Western Sydney as 14th pick of the draft.

Athletically built and at almost 6ft 5in tall, it is no surprise that Aidan is following his brother Cathal, who played for St Kilda and Collingwood, into football.

The tall defender, whose father played basketball for Ireland and Gaelic football for Brocagh, has sport in his blood.

On his selection, he said: “It is an honour to be recognised as a top-15 player, but that’s only a number. It makes no difference out on the track.

“It’s weird moving away from my family. lt hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

He added: “It feels as if I’m on a holiday but after today’s training session I’m definitely not, I’m here to earn my keep and my place.”

And although he is glad his parents took a punt on Australia, he still sees Ireland as his home.

“Ireland is very important to me. It’s where I’m from and I’ll never forget it, especially with all my family still over there.”

Aidan, who has family in Brocagh, Clonoe and Killyman, said if he still lived in Ireland, he would definitely be playing Gaelic football and looking for a job, instead of playing AFL for Greater Western Sydney.
