Coalisland candidates nominated for elections

ELECTION fever is to hit Coalisland as candidates for both the Stormont Assembly and Dungannon Council scramble for your votes.

Voting for both the Assembly elections and Dungannon Council will take place on Thursday May 5 2011 ­– on the same date as the Westminster referendum.

And Coalisland will be a hive of political posturing as ten of the candidates across the elections hail from the area.

Massive arms haul on Mountjoy Road

Police have confirmed a “very significant arms” find on Mountjoy Road,  after weapons and materials were discovered in a number of stolen cars in a garage.

This comes after locals witnessed a heavy police and helicopter presence in the area, particularly around Castlebay social club in Brocagh.

Police storm Coalisland home in ‘terrorist investigation’

POLICE teams stormed a Coalisland home yesterday as part of an investigation into “terrorist activity”.

UPDATE: Police returned to the house yesterday evening (Wednesday April 6) and have remained at the property throughout Thursday morning.

Tyrone man to play for Celtic

Paul Hughes in action on the field

Like many young men, Paul Hughes enjoys a kick about with his mates, but he’ll be doing much more than that when he lines out for Celtic at Parkhead in May.

The Dungannon man, whose father Dessie was born and raised in Newtownkelly, has won a competition to play for the Glasgow side after beating off almost 10,000 hopefuls.

Supporting communities after a suicide

Co-founder of the Níamh Louise Foundation, James McBennett, is to speak at Coalisland Holy Family Church tomorrow evening. Here he talks about the charity’s message, its breaking of social taboos and the pressures of living through grief so publicly.

Western HouseJAMES McBennett and his family were rocked by the death of his 15-year-old step-daughter Niamh McKee.

Her sudden death in November 2005 was a seismic shock to the Clonmore community and the surrounding areas.

Not only was her life cut so heartbreakingly short, but she died through suicide.

OPINION: The Yin and Yang of Coalisland

LIVING in a small town like Coalisland has it’s advantages and disadvantages.

I love the sense of community that this place has and the many great friendly people who also live, work and play here.

I however hate its claustrophobic, parochial attitudes that sometimes want to make you scream.

Two recent things seem to illustrate this “yin and yang” in Coalisland.
